Job Summary:

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks a Senior Research Assistant (SRA) for its HarvestChoice team (www.harvestchoice.org) based in the Environment and Production Technology Division (EPTD). The successful candidate will work on projects related to agricultural technology, natural resource management and impact evaluation primarily focused on sub-Saharan Africa, and also includes the maintenance and analysis of several important global datasets. Duties will include working with existing legacy applications, database and analysis systems that make extensive use of Visual FoxPro, GAMS, and STATA in addition to ESRI and other GIS software such as IDRISI, GRASS or DIVA.

This position is a one-year, fixed-term, renewable appointment located at IFPRI Headquarters in Washington, DC, but will involve travel to the countries in which IFPRI carries out its research.


Essential Duties:
• Carryout literature reviews and syntheses
• Write research and project reports, under supervision and guidance, and prepare PowerPoint presentations from them, as needed
• Manage and process large spatial and tabular datasets and manipulate them in GIS and database software
• Perform statistical/econometric data analysis and synthesize results
• Document and organize data and analytical results and manage the HarvestChoice data inventory (physical media, data folders, and metadata for web products)

Required Skills:
• Master’s degree in agricultural or natural resource economics, bioeconomic modeling, quantitative geography, or related fields
• Significant experience using analytical software tools, e.g., ESRI or other GIS products, statistical software such as STATA, and some familiarity with programming software such as GAMS.

Required Skills:
• Significant experience in managing and manipulating large spatial databases using a DB programming language (eg MySQL, VBA)
• Significant experience in handling large Excel sheets and applying formulas
• Highly organized approach to work tasks and documentation
• Excellent writing and analytical skills
• Fluency in oral and written English
• Ability to work independently and effectively with colleagues from diverse cultures
• Good interpersonal skills


Preferred Qualifications:
• Sound knowledge of agricultural policy, economic development, natural resource and/or international trade issues
• Experience in application development in GIS (e.g. ARC Server programming)
• Experience with web content management or web application programming
• Previous experience working on international development issues and/or extensive knowledge of relevant development issues
• Proficiency in one major language other than English
